As he leaves Hui Zhong asks if he still loves Sun Nyang (Empress Ki’s name) which makes him pause momentarily.

#Master sun episode 1 skin#
Hui Zhong reminds him that she saved his worthless skin and Wang Yoo replies with glassy eyes that he’s thankful his worthless skin was saved. Clearly these two have history and it didn’t end well. Hui Zhong makes a comment about how a concubine will take the throne – such an honour for Goryo – and Wang Yoo (Joo Jin Mo) says it’s his duty as King to bestow honour. Hui Zhong asks if he won’t stay for the coronation and the other man – captions introduce him as the Korean king Wang Yoo – questions why he should. The other man speaks gravely and says he’s returning to Goryo (Korea). They stop before a bridge where a man waits and Emperor Ta Hwan (or Hui Zhong of Yuan) approaches. A procession makes its way through the palace with the Emperor ( hello Ji Chang Wook) sitting on his palanquin. Solemn music plays as the screen shows as the ancient capital ‘Daidu’, or modern day Beijing. It is currently showing against SBS’s remake of the Japanese drama “Suspicious Housekeeper” and KBS’s “Mirae’s Choice” both had lower ratings than Empress Ki’s first. Ratings for Episode 1 were 11.1% and Episode 2 increased to 13.6% which is a good start for MBC and higher than “Goddess of Fire’s” starting ratings.

Oh well, at least Kim Bum got the girl in real life. However the three main actors are strong leads (love Ha Ji Won) so perhaps this will fare better than “Goddess of Fire”… Which didn’t even have a great ending. I consider this a one-off recap for now since Empress Ki will be 50 episodes long and I don’t know if I can hold out that long… Sageuks in general tend to lose me after the first 16 episodes. Empress Ki/Hwatu/기황후 started last week after MBC’s previous sageuk drama (and sadly snooze-fest) “Goddess of Fire Jung Yi”.
